Welcome to Radiology Info dot org!
Hello, I’m Dr. Geoffrey Rubin, a radiologist at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. I’d like to talk with you about magnetic resonance imaging of the body also known as body MRI.
Magnetic resonance imaging is a noninvasive test that uses radio waves, a magnetic field and a computer to produce detailed pictures of the inside of your body.
Body MRI may be used to help diagnose or monitor treatment for a variety of conditions within the chest, abdomen and pelvis. If you’re pregnant, it may also be used to safely monitor your baby.
If you’re scheduled for an MRI exam, there are several things you can do to prepare.
First, tell your doctor if there is any possibility you are pregnant and discuss any serious health problems, recent surgeries, and allergies you may have. Because some metallic objects can interfere with MRI images, also be sure to mention if you have any metal in your body.
On the day of your exam, it’s best to wear loose, comfortable clothing and leave any jewelry at home. Tell the technologist if you have metallic objects or medical devices implanted in your body.
The magnetic field is not harmful and does not expose people to radiation; however, some implanted devices like heart pacemakers or cochlear implants may malfunction or cause problems during the exam.
MRI exams are painless, but the machine does produce loud tapping and buzzing noises. You may be offered earmuffs, earplugs or headphones to reduce the sound. Some patients may find it uncomfortable to remain still for long periods while others may even experience claustrophobia. If this is a concern, you may want to ask your doctor for a mild sedative prior to the exam. If you do receive a sedative, then you will need someone to drive you home after the exam. Children may need to be sedated in order to hold still during the procedure. If this is the case, you will be given instructions for your child before the exam.
