Scanxiety
Do you ever get nervous about your medical imaging exams?
Yes, definitely! Most of us who have imaging exams regularly have some fear and worries around scan time. For me, I hate waiting for results and I always worry if I’m going to receive bad news. We call these feelings “scanxiety”.
Wow, there’s even a name for it!
Yes, scanxiety is very common. There are some great ways to deal with it though.
- It helps to have a healthcare team that really makes you feel comfortable and that communicates well with you.
- There are resources on the internet that show details of the tests you’re having so that you’ll know exactly what to expect.
- There are relaxation techniques that are also very helpful, listening to music, journaling and meditation.
That’s great to know, thanks.
Also, attitude is everything. I’ve found keeping things in perspective helps me deal with scanxiety and the fear of bad news. Each new piece of information gives you and your doctor a chance to make the best decision for your future.
Thanks so much for the tips and for reminding me I’m not alone!
Talk to your primary care physician or a counselor if you have severe scanxiety, need additional help or if you would like more information to better understand your imaging test results.
