Hi, I’m Dr. Elliot Fishman, a radiologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. I’d like to talk with you about computed tomography or CT of the sinuses.
CT or CAT scanning of the sinuses is a diagnostic imaging test that is used to evaluate the sinuses for disease or other abnormalities. Low-dose CT or CAT scanning is used to produce pictures of the paranasal sinus cavities, which are hollow, air-filled spaces within the bones of the face surrounding the nasal cavity.
If you’re scheduled for sinus CT scan, there are several things you can do to prepare for the examination.
First of all, inform your doctor of any recent illnesses and medical conditions. If you’re a female and there is a possibility you may be pregnant, please tell your doctor as well. Tell your doctor about any medications you’re taking and whether or not you have any allergies.
You may be asked not to eat or drink anything before the examination. When you come for the examination, leave any jewelry at home and wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to wear a gown.
You may have some concerns about CT scans. However, it’s important to consider the likelihood of benefit to your health of the examination. While CT scanning does use radiation, the benefit of an accurate diagnosis far outweighs any risk.
