June is Men's Health Month
Abdominal aortic aneurysm, also known as triple A, is a leading cause of sudden death for men over age 60.
Triple A is treatable if detected early. Warning signs may include intense back or abdominal pain, rapid pulse, nausea, vomiting, excessive sweating, and shock. Major risk factors include a family history of triple A, smoking and high blood pressure.
It is recommended that men between the ages of 65 and 75 who have smoked get a one-time screening test. However, men with a family history of triple A should begin screening at age 60.
Screening is performed using abdominal ultrasound which involves the use of a small transducer (probe) and gel to expose the body to sound waves that produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound is safe and painless.
Knowing the risk factors for triple A and getting screened can help prevent this life-threatening condition.
Visit the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm page for more information about this condition, how triple A is evaluated and treated.
